Though the story is fictional there are many real relations between the movie and reality (just look up the film on wikipedia).

It depicts the split between Chhota Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim (in D-Company) since Rajan was gaining too much power and so Dawood tried to kill him.

Of course, in the film the split came when Vivek Oberoi didnt like what Ajay Devgan did (killed innocent kids) and in real life Rajan was upset when Dawood did the Mumbai Bombings of 1993.
